Fall had begun in the North, and it was never a pleasant time for those still within the cold waters. If a fish were in the icy waters of the Northern areas of the world, their home tended to freeze over. It became much harder to survive, and made food much scarcer. Not even mermaids enjoyed the extreme colds of the Northern Winters, so Callan Serea was currently much farther along the globe. She had arrived back in Brazil about two weeks ago. The mermaid used to live there almost constantly, moving around just to keep the suspicions of humans down. But the mermaid had developed an interest in the geography of the world, and had begun to travel the globe.
She had begun to do things of which was rarely heard among her species. She would go to land, and willingly. She could not help it; it was just such a fascinating place to her. It held so many beauties, which differentiated from the ocean floor.
But despite being in Brazil, it was still only the start of spring in this tropical place. And the locals were used to heat, and therefore did not swim as often until summer started to roll by. So Callan figured, if she got lucky, that she should store some food of the human variety, her favourite, until they became more populated in the waters.
The mermaid lurked near shore, swimming along and looking for a silly victim who dared swim alone at night.

That silly victim just so happened to be Red, treading the cold waters alone at night. She had wanted to do a little swimming before heading to Africa to try and do some research one one of the largest dragon sub species ever recorded, the Wyvern. Plus this gave her a chance to improve upon her swimming skills, though there was no way she could ever catch up to her companion Ancaladar.
After all, there was no way she could swim faster than an aquatic dragon, with its powerful muscles and fins. Ancaladar was always able to outswim her no matter how much she exerted, and she wanted to at least be able to catch up to him casual swim speed. Red knew that she couldn't swim with Ancaladar during the day, which only left them to get together during the night time. And so there she was, swimming in the open in the dark of night, waiting for her draconic companion to meet her. During the day to prevent being spotted by fishing vessels, he was normally off far from shore, catching fish and other wildlife.

As Callan swam along, she noticed the dark shadow of something moving. It was much larger than a fish, and she grinned to herself. A human swam, and as she could not see any other life around, she assumed they were alone. Callan grinned to herself. Oh what luck, that she would come across a human so quickly, alone within the murky waters of the sea. What a foolish and stupid human, perhaps one that was intoxicated by their strange alcoholic drinks.
Callan swam to the surface, still a far distance from the human. Her head breaking into the air below followed by her arms and most of her torso, she touched her hands to the suface of the water. Impossibly, it froze, and she created a small platform made of ice. Pulling herself aboard, she sat. Despite the discomfort in being above water, Callan found humans were more likely to come to her if they could see her. And her voice would project much better than underwater. So there she sat, looking like the stereotypical image of a siren except for the fact she sat on ice instead of rock. Smiling to herself, she opened her mouth and sung.
The words were not even English or Spanish or any other human language, but a beautiful and hypnotizing wail. Mermaids spoke more than just the human languages. They could communicate with dolphins, and yet the song was not even that. It was just made up, something Callan had thrown together just for the fun of it. She spoke nonsense, and yet it sounded beautiful. Her voice was enchanting, a lure to humankind that had brought many swimming to their own deaths.

Red floated on her back, looking up at the clear night sky, the waters quite peaceful at this time. She loved coming out on cloudless nights, watching the stars millions of miles away, almost seeming to twinkle as they hung in place. It was part of the reason she loved to get out of the city, where the lights of the area were strong enough to drown out the natural lighting of the sky with a sickening orange. Red couldn't help but dream of a day where she could live far out from the city.
As she continued to float in the cool waters, she suddenly heard a voice, calling to her in some strange tongue. She couldn't understand what it promised her, but the voice itself was more than beautiful. The draconian was roused from her thoughts, rolling back into the water as her eyes searched for the source of the sound. There, on a floating chunk of ice, was a figure, leaning against the cold surface and singing its melody. She couldn't see the figure entirely from her place in the water, but Red couldn't help but feel overly compelled to swim toward the sound.
And so she did. Listening to the soothing melody, Red slowly began to paddle forward, forgetting about Ancaladar and all of her worldly troubles, the only concern on her enfeebled mind being to get closer to the source of the song, to be able to hear it much clearer from the cold waters. With a slow paddle she slowly arrived at the floating platform of ice, her small hands grasping the edge of the icy platform. She didn't even seem to care about the cold contact that her hand came into, as she tried to peer over the platform to see the sight of the being that sung its alluring melody.

As Callan sang her song, her dark eyes stayed fixated on the form in the nearby distance, a woman floating on her back within the murky waters of the ocean at night. The form obviously heard Callan’s beautiful melodic voice, for a moment it froze the woman, before the stranger started searching for the cause. Just like so many others, her eyes spotted her own doom, and she freely swam towards it. The mermaid grinned to herself, singing with more excitement at getting her prey so easily.
Soon the woman’s facial details could be seen. Quite lovely, in Callan’s opinion. Eating pretty food would at least be aesthetically pleasing. The girl seemed to lack fat, but well-toned muscles tended to produce a unique flavor. And a scrawny but toned girl was better than no human meat at all, after all.
As the human’s hands clawed at her icy seat, clambering to get on, Callan lifted her tail from the water, slapping it down to make a splash, wanting to watch the human’s reaction. Glee had overtaken Callan, and she smiled to the girl. She offered her hand as the human tried to stay on the ice. She paused her singing. “Would you like to take my hand? I will help you.” She returned to humming, her face kind
