Linette could feel herself being enveloped in a cloud of alcohol funk, and she could hear the lite tapping of the captains peg leg approaching them. She turned to look over her shoulder, and she could see that he did not seem to be a happy camper. "Maybe they forgot to load the rum..." she thought to herself. What ever the reason mustn't be good because he was walking right towards her and Apollo.
As he drew closer the smell of what ever putrid brew he drank increased ten fold; she leaned over the rail to get one last breathe of fresh air. The captain began his long winded and confusing tirade, but it caught Linette of guard when he said “I know you two are after something and there’s only one beastie I know of thas worth huntin’ this far north. I won’t have such. Not on my boat. I'll kick yer asses off my boat so fast yer heads'll spin.” How could he know of the Akhluts and that they were after one. She tried to look to Apollo for answers, but she couldn't help but stare back at the crazy old man.
“I’m not willing to risk my crew cause some two young fools have got an idea in their heads. Tell me now and I’d might’n be willing to offer you my help, but I want to know what you two are planning and whether or not it endangers my crew.” he followed with. Despite being a drunk the captain cared and was loyal to his crew. He still made her feel uneasy, but she thought it was at least fair to be honest with him.
" We're here looking an Akhlut captain" She said trying to sound somewhat confident; it didn't seem like the crew was paying them any mind. " I'm not asking that you or your crew risk your selves fighting them: we just need you the get us to the wilderness where we can begin our search" Linette didn't mean to cry as she was saying this; but the captain's stench made her eyes water.
She looked up at Apollo looking for some help of any kind; she'd been completely honest with the captain, but he didn't seem very convinced.

Apollo was leaning over the ramp as the captain began walking to Linette and him. Apollo could tell that Linette smelled what he smelled; hot, putrid, alcohol breath. Apollo wasn't sure if that smell came from fresh alcohol or if it already mixed into his body and wouldn't wash off, if he did in fact tried to wash.
Linette quickly leaned over the ramp to get a fresh breather of air, but there was no way to avoid this smell, not by that way at least.
The captain then went on to talk about how he had a rebel lying in him, and he didn't follow trends, and how he knew that they were up to something. Linette seemed worried, although, Apollo wasn't. He knew that this captain didn't know a single thing about their goal. In fact, this captain definitely knew littler than he let on. If Apollo wanted, he could tell some incredibly stupid lie for the reason they were on this trip, and the captain may believe it.
However, what Linette said may have ruined Apollo's confidence a little. "We're here looking an Akhlut captain," she said. "I'm not asking that you or your crew risk your selves fighting them: we just need you the get us to the wilderness where we can begin our search." Linette then looked towards Apollo with eyes wide enough for the draconian to notice her tears. Were the smells that bad for her?
Apollo sighed, then finally looked at the captain, who was already in an angry, drunken fit, it seemed. In a swift motion, Apollo placed a hand on Linette's back. He then pulled her into him, whether she accepted his embrace or not was up to her. She would find a different smell than the captain's on Apollo's chest if she did, though. Apollo always had on cologne, ever since he learned that some women was attracted to this aroma. Apollo would then place his other hand on Linette's waist and pull her into him even closer.
Still looking at the captain with intense eyes, Apollo would say, "I'm sorry captain, but me and my honey are just sight seeing. You can take this ship anywhere you want, and we will willingly follow. However, we just found that this ship's route was the perfect one for us. Please, think nothing of this. As for the Ahklut, if we do meet one, we would surely be happy to see it."
Apollo then moved his chin to the captain's headquarters and asked, "Are you not suppose to be captaining a ship? I think your men may need you more than we do."

The captain's peg leg clattered to the floor. It was giving him splinters so Ben didn't really mind it's loss, though it did make his balance questionable for a few seconds.
Finally, Linette had spilled the proverbial beans. It was nice to know for certain what this whole situation was about. It was interesting enough that Ben was pretty sure he'd like to tag along, being no stranger to danger.
Experience had taught Ben that it was fun to play pretend, but when supes -His way of he referring to supernaturals, non-humans- were involved, especially on a dangerous quest, it was often best to keep the fooling around to a minimum.
"I appreciate and respect your honesty, young miss," Locke thanked Linette, the grizzled older man finally dropping his crazy old sailor routine complete with nonsensical Eastwood quotes and just speaking with his normal voice, one that sounded awfully young for his grizzled countenance. He was running out of quotes, anyways, though he was a bit disappointed that he hadn't gotten to do his impression of that speech from Jaws.
"Two is a small number for those wishing to take on a pack of Akhlut. I cannot in good conscience send you into the wild alone but I will do what I can to help you," Ben didn't mention that it was mostly because he was growing bored of playing Cap'n Flint, the drunken captain. And maybe he was feeling a bit homesick. Akhlut totally reminded him of the KD.
"My ship can take us to the specified region but from there we'll have to travel on our own. Since I don't know if we'll be returning, I cannot ask my crew to wait for us. You'll have to hike back to civilization once this is all over."
Once they'd finished talking, Ben would bid them bye and walk away, striding with a confidence and purpose that seemed worlds different from the captain who'd tried to fight a wall earlier. Locke needed to change and wash the brewery stench off of himself. There was work to be done.

Linette felt Apollo's hand on her back. Accepting his embrace she buried her face in Apollo's chest to escape from the foul smell of the captain's alcohol riddled breath. The smell of his cologne was quiet nice and a preferred alternative to booze for breathe, she could've sworn she'd smelled it passing an American Eagle store once while she was in Miami. Placing her Ear to Apollo's chest Linette could hear the steady beat of his heart, it was slow and steady like a bass drum. She was glad someone on this adventure wasn't a ball of nerves and worry; his confidence made her feel much more at ease.
Apollo said his bit trying to salvage the situation which Linette was thankful for, but the captains reply caught her attention. "I appreciate and respect your honesty, young miss," he spoke; however his voice had taken on an entirely different demeanor. It was almost like talking to someone her age. Only half peeking out of her hiding spot Linette looked at the captain.
"Two is a small number for those wishing to take on a pack of Akhlut. I cannot in good conscience send you into the wild alone but I will do what I can to help you," The unexpected shift in his personality unsettled her slightly and made her wonder exactly who this strange man was. he continued with "My ship can take us to the specified region but from there we'll have to travel on our own. Since I don't know if we'll be returning, I cannot ask my crew to wait for us. You'll have to hike back to civilization once this is all over." and he trotted along, with a jolly mood taking his stench with him.
Pushing lightly away from Apollo, Linette looked up at him more baffled than ever before. "Thank you for that, but am I the only who found that conversation extremely odd? I'm not rejecting his help but can we honestly trust him?" she said with great uncertainty.

"I appreciate and respect your honesty, young miss," the captain said. His attitude changed completely, and his speech pattern was different as well. It was as though this very old man became young again, and nicer. Regular people didn't do that, which made Apollo question if this man was regular, or even a man.
"Two is a small number for those wishing to take on a pack of Akhlut. I cannot in good conscience send you into the wild alone, but I will do what I can to help you," the captain continued. Apollo wanted to tell him that he and Linette was enough, or that they carried with them a large dragon that could split an Ahklut into two with her jaw, but he wasn't even sure himself that he and Linnette would come out of this alive. Maybe the captain's help could be useful, or maybe the captain could have an evil plan up his sleeves.
"My ship can take us to the specified region but from there we'll have to travel on our own. Since I don't know if we'll be returning, I cannot ask my crew to wait for us. You'll have to hike back to civilization once this is all over."
Apollo had nothing to say to the captain. He only nodded when the man finished talking, then began his series of rapid thoughts when the man left. He thought so much about this sudden phenomenon that he did not notice he was still holding Linette. Quickly, with flushed cheeks, Apollo let go of his blue haired friend, reverting back to his shy self.
"Thank you for that," she said. "but am I the only who found that conversation extremely odd? I'm not rejecting his help but can we honestly trust him?"
"No," Apollo quickly answered. "But, that doesn't mean that we can't accept his help. We're practically going into this hunt blind. It would be good to have a little help from... Whoever that man really is."
Apollo sighed and leaned over the railing again. The ocean looked like such a simple place to live. It was probably much better than life on land. Here, Apollo had to worry about a lot of people gunning for him, he had to be very careful. Out there, if he was a fish, he would only know one predator, and only one way to avoid that predator. On land, predators could have his smile, and pretend to be one of him. This world sucked, and yet it continued to spin, and Apollo spun with it.
"Say, Linette," Apollo called out to his friend. "I always wanted to know... What was it like before you were set free? I know... That mermaids were captured before, and kept prisoner by some woman with huge amounts power... Where you one of those captured mermaids?"

Once he'd returned to his cabin, Ben proceeded to shower. The change in scent was so noticeable that just thinking of how badly he'd smelled earlier made his eyes water a little bit. Or was that the shampoo in his eyes? He supposed it didn't really matter.
Once he'd finished washing up, Locke wiped the fog from the mirror in his small bathroom. Observing his grizzled appearance, he almost felt bad for the real Cap'n Flint. His eyes had been so sad, his broken pride clear when Ben had found him that the young man just had to take his form.
After years of alcohol abuse, there were no signs of jaundice or any other medical attention. His torso carried a few scars, most rather old but some more recent, and none of them apparently deliberate. Ben briefly traced one that ran the length of his side and, once he'd trimmed the crazy facial hair down to some respectable grey stubble, the marks they'd hid were more apparent.
The pleasant creases around his mouth and eyes told a story, just as his numerous scars did, Ben was sure. He would never know the man's story, even though he held Flint's form. The grizzled older man wasn't entirely sure how to feel about that. He'd never learned any other persona's story, either. No one would remember their stories, no one would remember that they were, that they'd been, their growth.
One thought crawled through Locke's mind that bothered him as he got dressed. By playing other people, was he neglecting to grow his own story?

"No," Apollo quickly answered. "But, that doesn't mean that we can't accept his help. We're practically going into this hunt blind. It would be good to have a little help from... Whoever that man really is." Linette looked out an the calm waters of the sea. Why did the world have to be such a dishonest place: couldn't everyone be open with one another. It sounded silly coming from someone who's whole identity was a lye, but still. Out in the ocean she never worried about being honest with other merfolk.
"Say, Linette," Apollo pulled her from her thinking. "I always wanted to know... What was it like before you were set free? I know... That mermaids were captured before, and kept prisoner by some woman with huge amounts power... Where you one of those captured mermaids?" he asked sincerity reflecting in his eyes. Linette smiled, despite being friends with Apollo they really didn't know that much about one another's past experiences in life.
"I wasn't one of the captured mermaids, but i was born in the cave that Ursula imprisoned my people in. The cave wasn't a scary place; there were other children to play with. The pesky sea otters always stole my stuff and pulled my hair." she giggled thinking back on it now was kind of funny.
" Mermaids have always been known to be exceptional singers, but from a young age many told me i was blessed with an amazing voice. I'm to shy to actually sing in front of people though" she said attempting to hide her blush by looking back over the rail at the water. " The only one who I ever sang for was my mother....." she trailed off looking into nothing.....

Apollo looked at Linette carefully as she told him her story.
"I wasn't one of the captured mermaids," she said. "But i was born in the cave that Ursula imprisoned my people in. The cave wasn't a scary place; there were other children to play with. The pesky sea otters always stole my stuff and pulled my hair." At the memories, she smiled. Even though she was kept prisoner, she still lived a good life.
Apollo could tell that she played, laughed with friends, and enjoyed all that she did have when she barely had anything. Although, when Apollo imagined imprisonment, he thought of something dark and cruel. Even though this Ursula took away some of their free will, she did it because she loved the mermaids, and didn't wish for any harm to come their way. That was a prison alright, but one Apollo would've preferred...
"Mermaids have always been known to be exceptional singers," she continued. "But from a young age many told me i was blessed with an amazing voice. I'm to shy to actually sing in front of people though." She began to blush. She was a very cute girl, with graceful blue hair that danced in the wind, and a soothing voice that would make all the worries in the world disappear. Linette was the type of girl Apollo would die to protect, happily jump in a fire to save, and bow down on one knee to praise. Since she wanted this Akhlut pup, Apollo would make it so.
Lover boy, Bayla teased him.
Apollo's cheeks flushed. Shut up or I'm making you get out of my pocket.
By the time Apollo came back to his and Linette's conversation, he heard a horn sound off above him. "Land ho!" Someone shouted, then everyone looked towards the front ship as a port began to slowly appear from behind a mountain.
A town, Apollo noted. And beyond that, a forest. And beyond that, our uncertain death.
Apollo picked up his bag and smiled at Linette. "Well, since I am risking my life," he said. "Maybe you can repay me by letting me hear you sing. I'm sure the pup would love it."
As everyone readied to port, Apollo waited for Linette to get ready. Then, begrudgingly, he waited for his mysterious captain to lead the way.

The captain emerged from his cabin a new man as the crew informed him that they would be docking on land soon. While his weathered face still had a stoic set to it and thick, gray stubble, Flint's strong jaw was clenched in determination. He stood with his back straight, pride among his bearing once again.
The first thing he did was head over to the two young'ins. Across his back was a rifle and an exquisitely crafted shotgun. The shotgun hadn't belonged to Flint in life, but Ben thought he may have need of it for the battles ahead.
"You two ready to do this?" Flint asked, speaking once more in his normal, mature voice. He'd volunteered his help for their quest but he had no intention of letting these two chuckle heads get him killed. Flint would fight and he would fight well but he would leave them to die if they screwed up and put his life at risk.

Linette couldn't help but remember the night that she'd lost her mother. The day had started out calm; however, as the storm approached the sea became restless. The waves had turned into a violent maelstrom crashing into her dragging her one way and sweeping her mother off another. It'd had been so long that Linette had lost hope that she was even alive. The Loud Boat horn pulled Linette from her day dream.
"Well, since I am risking my life," Apollo paused "Maybe you can repay me by letting me hear you sing. I'm sure the pup would love it." he smiled at her. The thought of singing in front of him tied her stomach into knots, but his bright spirit gave her hope that they'd come out of this in one piece. Brushing a few strands of hair out of her eye she giggled "You've got a deal Apollo".
As if on cue the third member of their party arrived in brighter spirits than Linette would've imagined. It appeared that the captain had turned over a new leaf. Not only that; he carried what appeared to be an extremely fancy gun with him. "You two ready to do this?" Linette wasn't sure exactly how the answer so she just nodded her head and looked back to Apollo.

"You two ready to do this?" The captain asked. He seemed totally changed now. He smelled fresh, his voice was nicer, and... Did he grow a new leg?!
"Yes," Apollo said to him with a little caution. "Well, do you know where we must go? Because... I have no idea..." Apollo was telling half a lie. He did not know where to go, but with Bayla with him, Apollo would never get lost. That dragon's nose was incredibly strong, along with that sharp instinct of hers. No maze, nor hiding genius could match her.
What Apollo really wanted to see was if this man new more than they did. It didn't hurt to see his level of intelligence, however high it may be. Although, Apollo was very alert, especially with Linnette around. If this man made so much as the wrong move, the draconian would give him a nice head shot. Never was Apollo as serious as when he was on a job, be it hunting or protecting.

The young woman nodded her head at his question so Flint waved one of his crew over, an odd looking man with freakishly buff forearms and boney upper arms. "These two and I will be disembarking here. Inform Reginald that the ship is under his command until I return." The grizzled old man nearly turned away but instead he turned back to the crewman and held out one rough palm to shake his hand.
"Twas an honor sailing with ye," The captain told the man gruffly. He hadn't said it, but the crew all knew that this would be the grizzled old man's last time on the ship. Flint would never return.
"None of that baby talk around me, son." The sailor told him, trying to maintain his tough exterior. He brought one forearm up to his only open eye, wiping away what appeared to be the beginning of a tear with one of the anchor tattoos on his arm before he handed Flint his trusty pipe.
The sailor saluted Flint one last time before he left to inform Reginald.
"We're gonna miss ya, Cap'n."
Flint watched him leave, looking at the other crew members afterwards. They were good men, all of them.
"I'll be right behind ye, miss." The grizzled old captain kept his face stern but one could tell by the set of his jaw and the wistful manner with which he looked over the ship, a weathered vessel that had seen better days, that he did not believe he would ever lay sight upon it and it's crew again.

Gwen looked to the sky for about the eighth million time today to get a gauge on how long they had before the storm would hit; she stepped towards the edge of the dock and knelt down to feel the water. Placing her palm on the cool surface she could feel the storms energy and it was moving quickly. "Where ever it is we're going we need to move fast, the storm is close and that's the time Akhluts are most active. It provides them camouflage for hunting; making them more dangerous...." Linette trailed off while shaking the chill water from her hand.
"I'm kinda shooting in the dark here, but should we go look in the mountains?" Linette asked not making eye contact with the captain. It seemed like the place to look for Akhluts, but she didn't want to seem push or condescending. Not to mention she still didn't entirely trust captain Flint.
Post by Apollo Lion on Sept 23, 2015 16:42:23 GMT -5
What did this bitch just say? was Bayla's reaction when Linette mentioned the storm. Apollo would have nagged his dragon for calling the mermaid a bitch, but he was in too much shock to think over anything.
"S-storm?" Apollo questioned. "D-did she just say storm?" The draconian looked to the captain for confirmation, but he doubted that the old man would fill him in on anything.
"Mountains and storm never make for a good match," Apollo pointed out when Linette mentioned going up the nearest mountain. That idea was suicide, just as much as the idea of hunting an Akhlut was. However... Hers was the only idea they had, so it was what they were going to go with.
"Fine," Apollo said. "But you guys will be following me, got it? And if the storm is getting too rough, we will need to return and try again tomorrow. We aren't risking our lives when our lives don't need risking." Apollo then looked at the mountain. It was so far away, and seemed like it would take a great long walk just to get there.
I hope this storm doesn't come any time soon... Apollo began walking, ushering Linette to follow behind him.
Post by Benjamin Locke on Sept 23, 2015 18:55:27 GMT -5
"Storm?" The captain asked, worried. Exposure was a very big deal. Out in the wilderness these two would be screwed if shit got too real. "Akhlut are known for their brutal attacks during snowstorms, yes? I wouldn't want them to find us. Especially not in the middle of a serious storm. They're vicious."
Flint shrugged. "I trust that you decided where to look before you traveled all the way here, yes?" The two didn't seem to be able to decide on just where exactly they wanted to go. This situation was getting tedious, but Ben didn't want to take charge. At least not just yet.
"Wherever you decide to look, miss, you've got my support. Mountains, storm, or none. I'm in this quest for the long haul now."
The captain would follow once they'd left. Flint felt that he'd said all that he needed to on the subject. Besides, it was their mission. He was just the help.
