As the fire waxed and then curiously waned, alertness to Kenji's presence in the camp also grew and then shrunk. It only took a minute or two for the first few people to awaken after tents had been set ablaze near them, and they consequently alerted the rest of the fairly substantial camp. Few ever managed to don their equipment fast enough to truly confront the wrathful Yamamoto, but those who did proved to be a slightly more worthy challenge than the buffoons who normally thought it was a good idea to challenge him.
The most challenging opponent of the night was the leader of the group, who had sought his own destruction out through the fire and flames. The fight between avenger and kidnapper was quick and brutal, but it's ending was as predictable as it's beginning. The enraged man finally managed to guide a powerful thrust into one of Kenji's thick pauldrons, just barely missing the fatal seam between arm and chest pieces. It was a powerful enough blow to send it's receiver reeling, shoulder first, into a tight circle. A circle that ended with the drawing of a tanto, and its merciless slamming into the captain's exposed neck.
The next moment brought a slight distraction, a voice, just loud enough to draw the black samurai's attention away from an arrow shrieking it's way through the ravenous flames. The long metal point dug and ground its way through the recently created weakness in Kenji's charred armor, pushing eventually into the sensitive flesh beyond the pauldron. The arrow missed any vital area, thankfully, though it managed to disable the use of that arm for the time being. A smoke bomb was quickly deployed to provide cover from any more would-be assassins while Kenji charged off to collect his bounty from the captain's quarters, and then to gather his fiery ally. A cry that it was time to go and the wave of an arm was all that he offered to Eos on his way out to help all of the would-be hostages onto their feet.

The poor, somewhat drunk daemoness was so hopelessly confused. What was she to do? This Spirit was very horrible at giving out directions, which she should have expected considering he never talked. Couldn’t he please simply tell Eos what he wanted her to do? She’d had to face her biggest fear- being alone in the dark- as well as run around naked, and now she had to use her powers over fire while only a few meters away from a bunch of people! And now, despite the risk she was taking, trying so hard to help the Spirit, she was being summoned away. At least the Spirit made some noise this time around!
So the daemoness let the fire resume its quest to sate its unstopping hunger, and ran towards the group. She caught up quickly to the group, noticing the wound in the Spirit. It struck her as an odd thing, that Spirits could bleed. But now was not the time to dwell on that, and Eos helped whomever she could get away from the blaze. Not that it was really a problem, considering her strange abilities, but it was best to hurry anyways.

Kenji quickly counted heads as they emerged from the flames, keeping track of their numbers to get a read of how many people he would be escorting back to their palace of sorts. If there were few enough then they could be transported back via Senbo, but if not they would all be walking, whether they liked it or not. The brief lull in activity allowed the aging ronin to make a cursory inspection of the long spiraled shaft of wood protruding rudely from his shoulder. It hadn't gone too deep which was fortunate, but it still hurt like hell and was going to be a pain to remove without any further damage. To armor or to arm.
The last bobbing head that Kenji saw emerge from the flames was that of his new friend. He snapped the most recent addition of his body in twain a few fingers away from the lamellar that it had penetrated, and then waved to her. A quick "There's no point in playing pretend anymore. Legends don't burn down villages." came out of his mouth as he tossed the barren stick into the grass at his feet. "Shouldn't keep the royalty waiting." was next out of the grisly mask covering his face, and the last before he took one last look at the flames lapping at the horizon before turning around to take inventory over the condition of the family recently rescued from their comfortable cages.
There were only a few people, luckily enough. Two and three quarters, really. A pint-sized young woman and a baby belonging to the lord and his lady weren't quite large enough to constitute the weight of an adult, which meant that everyone could be taken back home via flight. They didn't have to leave behind any pickings either, which would give Kenji and his scaly green friend a leg up in the next population center they came across. And possibly Eos, if she decided to stick with them. She clearly didn't have any stable lodging, and wasn't from the island. A mental note was made to ask her about it later, when things had calmed down.

Dark eyes were carefully watching the Spirit, and Eos felt a lurch in her stomach when he broke off what was embedded inside his body. The daemoness was no stranger to battle, but she preferred not seeing others get hurt.
When the Spirit motioned to her, she rushed over. He spoke, and surprise overcame her when she recognized the voice of her earlier friend. She stared at his back as he turned away, a mixture of emotions overcoming her. She felt confusion and embarrassment, wondering if this was all a trick, and that they were laughing at her foolishness. She also felt angry, being led on this strange series of events simply because he did not feel like being honest. Her cheeks were as red as the raging inferno behind them.
Silent, she followed along, mentally scolding herself for participating in all this. A baby wailed, and the woman who was caring for it seemed ragged. Eos offered to hold the child, and after the nurse obtained permission from the lady, Eos rocked and crooned at the small human in her arms. She hummed a few songs, from the various lands she had visited, the comfort of being around a child distracting her from her thoughts. Staying at the back of the group, to make sure no one strayed, they followed ‘the Spirit’.
