I propose a new sort of points system. Instead of having blurred concrete lines between levels of ability and mastery by a character, a new system could be implemented to add depth and some steps.
The new system would largely supplement the existing one, by simply turning it into a more fluid advancement between stages of abilities. Say that Player X wants to invest points in Necromancy. With the current system, they would be required to collect 50 points, not a hard thing to do admittedly, and then spend them all at once on the first tier. That player's character now suddenly knows the basics of the complex Necromantic arts. With the incremental system I propose, each tier of ability would be split into increments, perhaps increments of five or ten points, of which there would be ten or five respectively. Now player X can actually learn how to raise the dead.
In other words, you would have steps leading to each existing level of an ability. At the halfway point of each might be a milestone, where a small bonus or enhancement to the previous tier could be made. Doing this would offer a more subtle and fluid way of obtaining abilities than the existing system does.
Probably am not the most eloquent person, so I can clarify if there is any confusion, or any questions.
