The crisp air was invigorating, although not all agreed. The weather was a bit chilly, in Ares’ opinion, but she had not been raised in the Italian countryside. However, the Greek and Italian climates were similar, so she figured 8 degrees (or 42, if one was using imperial measurements. But why one would do that, they would have to be American!) was making most of the locals bundle up a little. The cold wasn’t much of a bother though, and a bit of exercise warmed her blood. However, what really got her blood pumping was the thought of the day.
It was February 27, 2015. An important day, at least in Ares’ opinion. It was the day of the Equirria- or at least the first of the two. It was an important day to the Romans, and for Ares it was her day of celebration. The Festival of War and Blood.
For the ancient Romans, who had been wise in worshipping Mars, they made the Equirria. It was something even the Greeks hadn’t done, which is why the Goddess chose it as her official holiday. They worshipped their old war God with horses, and even in modern Italy, Rome was upholding the tradition that had been recorded even on the earliest stone calendars. The area of Campus Martius was cleared in preparation of the race, and a track had been set up with fake wooden stands. Usually, the festival was forgotten, and uncelebrated. But Ares had done some meddling, having a politician host the event to ‘celebrate Rome’s culture’. Ares had even gone so far as to assure that it would be a chariot race. It would be a bit dull, considering these modern barbarians didn’t admit to enjoying bloodshed, but Ares certainly had a plan. Of course, she still had to choose who was worthy.
