Carissa Diane Lee
theme song:;
King of Anything by Sara Barielles
description:;
Carissa was often described as that “quiet child.” While this description certainly got old, it was apt. She is quiet. It’s not from lack of talking or anything like that; she simply tries not to draw attention to herself. A background character, she tries to keep to herself and to those she loves. She’s loyal to a fault, often sticking around disrespectful people despite any dislike. Her character has often been attributed as reliable, supportive, and a team player- words from former employers, teachers, and friends that ring a hollow tune to her still today. While she does try not to draw attention to herself, she enjoys spending time with her friends exploring new places; she loves going out and having a good time; while not the chattiest, she loves to not only watch people but hear their stories. The last word she would ascribe to herself, as something for others to bear in mind, is feisty. When with loved ones, or in a particularly tense situation, Carissa speaks her mind and thinks about her words later. Carissa: soft, present, and feisty.

background:;
Carissa was born in Hartford, Connecticut to a single mother and on-again, off-again father. This dynamic changed when she was 10 years old and her mother started to feel ill, at least, that’s how Carissa remembers it. Worried about bills and care issues, her mother rushed into a marriage with her then boyfriend, Joe. Joe and Carissa get along well enough, and Carissa will always be grateful for how Joe handled the numerous disruptions of life. Joe had had one previous marriage already and handled 4 children and Carissa most days of the week. This is likely where Carissa developed her desire to be invisible, but present. When reminiscing, she loves to recall watching the mishaps happen as opposed to being involved in the mishaps. Her favorite step-brother, for example, seemed to have a knack for chemistry but absolutely no subtlety. She always witnessed his downfall.
Memory lane is bittersweet for Carissa. By 12, her mother had been in and out of the hospital too many times to count. Carissa was with her often. She remembers lovely things about her mother- like which comics were the best or how to make an actual Quarter Pounder- but she remembers too often watching her mother vanish before her very eyes. Her mother died when she was 14 from a type of Melanoma, a skin cancer. Carissa celebrates the memory of her mother every year with a homemade Quarter Pounder and the last movie they watched together, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Shortly after the passing of her mother, legal pursuits were filed from her father for guardianship. He won. Carissa said goodbye to Joe and was bussed from Hartford to some suburb in Massachusetts.
Her father, Craig, wasn’t a bad guy. He was flaky, but Carissa figures that had to do with having a kid so young. He’s an accountant with a steady job, likes riding motorcycles, and, to Carissa’s disgust, smoking cigarettes. She’s tried for years to get him to quit but has never found success with it. This is where she learned about the wonders of coffee and coffee-based drinks and how make-up can be a great stress reliever. Of course, this was all before she learned how to drive so when it was truly hard, she would exercise. Jogging has since become her exercise of choice.
Soon, she turned her attentions from getting him to quit to more life-saving ideas. What was she to do with her life? She loved the nurses she’d met in the hospital and had always had a strong desire to help those in need…But was nursing for her? She believed so after a thorough scare learning to drive with her father. It was a small crash, her fault, and she has never fully shaken the dread of getting behind the wheel. But, following the incident, her interactions with the nurses solidified her desire to help others heal. So she invested in researching a good school to attend.
Carissa enrolled in Columbia University to study nursing as soon as she could. She managed to snag a few scholarships and, with the support of her dad, graduated from the program a proud nurse. She now works as a nurse for a private practice in the city. She’s very good at her job because she listens and supports her patients. She’s still young and has a long road ahead of her, but she knows she is in the right place- not just in nursing, but in the city she resides in.
She loves the city life for its diverse amounts of people but detests the smells that seem to plague its streets. The smell is a small price to pay considering how close work is to her home and how cheap public transportation is. Though she possesses a car, she seldom drives it. Carissa has a near miss when learning to drive with her father and the event has since kept her somewhat, rattled when she drives. She really does not trust drivers when she is driving.
Carissa’s free time is often spent with friends exploring the city. When she’s not with them, she is often wandering about people-watching. Her favorite spots are the public library, an open market across town, and parking lots. She’ll often just sit outside the store and feign checking her phone or something to watch what occurs between cars and the entrance of the store.
