"Can I have another please?" she asked the bartender in her charming southern accent. The woman came back quick enough with Lydia's Long Island iced tea. She thanked the nice woman and tipped her.
Lydia wasn't seen frequently at bars, not since college at least. Even then she spent a lot more time doing other activities such as studying or perfecting her magic tricks. But tonight she was between shows and was STARVING. The bars were the only thing that she found open this time of night, and if you were going to eat a meal at a bar you might as well enjoy an alcoholic beverage or six while you're there. Her hotel was right down the street anyway, so it's not like she was going to have to drive anywhere. Besides, she wasn't really planning on getting plastered.
Her fries were on the soggy side but everyone seemed super nice and welcoming. It was always nice to chat with people that were waiting for their drinks up at the bar. Overall it was turning out to be a pretty nice Saturday night. Part of her hoped there would be a little more excitement in the nearby future. Bar fight! Just kidding. Maybe.

He was back. Hopefully for quite a while this time. Jack had been spending the vast majority of his time in Nysa, lately, only returning to Earth to catch a few hours of sleep in relative safety. Simply put, Jack was homesick. Nysa was a beautiful place but it was foreign and the people, while some friendly, simply weren't the friends and folks he'd left back on Earth. It was time to relax. That meant a bar, right? An Earth bar.
After a quick shower, the young mage took a few moments to stare at his reflection in the mirror. The sun kissed gold of Jack's complexion managed to hide the faintly darkened circles under his eyes quite well. He felt a little insecure about the new scars on his outer right thigh. Though there were only two, looking at them made the young man trace the faint pattern along his side and wonder how far he'd truly come if he still allowed such injuries.
Jack practiced his typically disarming smile in the mirror before getting dressed, slipping into some dark jeans and a decent shirt. He threw on his leather jacket, mostly out of habit, but managed to keep from zipping up his typical crimson coat. The young man was out the door shortly after, on his way to a bar. He didn't intend to visit any of his usual haunts so he'd been sure to bring along an id. All he had left to worry about tonight was drinking too much. No attacks, no surprises. Probably.
Entering the building, Jack approached the bar, not looking too closely at any of the other customers. Though his new scars couldn't be seen, he could feel their eyes on him nonetheless. He took a seat between a dark haired woman and a man who seemed to be socializing with a different, decidedly more blonde woman on his opposite side, giving the bartender his best smile and sliding his id across the bar before she could even finish asking for it.
"Bourbon, please," The young mage requested while deftly slipping a twenty into the tip collection. "Just to start."

More people seemed to be cramming in the bar area, less and less open seats were available. Someone left, and someone else took the open seat next to her in their place. She was picking the decent parts of the remainder of her fries. Although she was still hungry, these weren't very appealing. Lydia thought about ordering something else. She slid the plate away from her slightly, deciding she was done for now.
She overheard the newcomer order their bourbon, and the voice seemed familiar. Lydia glanced over briefly, not really able to get a good look at their face. The woman behind the bar distracted her thoughts when she asked if everything was ok, and if she was done with the food. "Yes, thank you very much."
Lydia was almost afraid to look over at the person again, but she did with only slightly moving her head to the side. Jack? What were the odds of seeing him again, especially without having planned a meeting first. It wasn't that she wasn't happy to see him, it's just that she wasn't expecting to see him. They met each other months ago and she hadn't really heard from him since. What if he had been purposely avoiding her, and now here they were? Her heart was pounding in her chest as she argued with herself on what to do.
Finally, she decided to stop being a chicken and say hello. What's the worst that could happen? Lydia reached out and lightly tapped his shoulder to grab his attention. If he turned to look at her she would smile and wait to see his reaction.

When the young man felt a tap on his shoulder, he tensed up, reflexively prepared for a fight. He turned to see who'd asked for his attention and couldn't have been more surprised. Jack's eyes widened as recognition dawned on him, followed swiftly by a wide grin. It was such a wonderful coincidence to run into a friendly face in the same random bar in the same random city that he'd chosen to visit upon his return. And for that friendly face to belong to Lydia, a woman he'd met some months ago in a video arcade, was one of the more pleasant surprises he'd experienced recently.
"Lydia!" Jack began, sounding pleasantly surprised. Though pleased to see her, the young man was somewhat nervous to see her again after being out of contact for most of the time since their initial meeting. His heart raced as he tried to come up with the proper words, or really just any words. His face turned pretty red when he realized that he'd been so preoccupied that he'd taken a seat directly next to her and hadn't even noticed. "I'm so sorry. I can't believe I'm so tired I didn't recognize you when I sat down!"
Now, the young mage wasn't exactly the hugging type but he was totally gonna go for one. There wasn't even a slightly perverted or sexual motive behind his attempt to make physical contact. Not even a little bit. Jack leaned in for a hug, saying "I know it isn't been that long but I feel like I have seen you in forever. I just got back from a trip. What have you been getting up to? How've you been?"
Memories flashed through the Jack's head of their last encounter. He hadn't been avoiding her had he? No, of course not. Right? The young man was pretty sure he wasn't. In fact, seeing her had been pretty close to the top of his list upon returning to Earth. He was happy to see her again, if caught a bit off guard to run into her while in such an unexpected place. It occurred to Jack that Lydia might think he'd been avoiding her and he was a little uncomfortable with himself for not giving her any heads up that he was going to be dropping off the face of the Earth for a short time. Literally.
