The deity merely chuckled, shaking his head as he looked between the two men. He then focused his gaze upon Congressman Blazer. "You say you're a great judge of character Mister Blazer? You believe that telling the world, in it's current state, about people who exist with supernatural powers is the best thing to do? Do you honestly believe they're ready to accept that knowledge reasonably? You think that there won't be panic? Over-reaction? Do you know what people do with what they don't understand Mister Blazer? Do you know what they will do to people like you and your daughter mister Blazer? If you aren't assassinated first, by supernatural or the normal human race, you will become a target for 'observation.' You will become a freak show Mister Blazer. A circus experiment in some laboratory. It might start out subtly at first. They'll ask to look you over, run a few tests... but eventually your life, as you know it, will be over."
"The truth is humanity just isn't ready to accept the truth of their own existence. They don't like knowing, or believing that there is a power out there that could snuff out their existence like blowing out a candle. Yet for all that, they haven't done so yet, so why are you concerned about telling the general public that these people exist? Many of them try to hide it. They try to live their lives out as normal people, and you are taking that from them. They'll be targeted, they'll be hated, they'll be feared, just by being unfortunate enough to be born with supernatural abilities they may not even want. Are you ready to do that Mister Blazer? Are you ready to destroy not only the lives of you and your family, but destroy the lives of COUNTLESS innocent people who've done nothing wrong except for being born gifted? Is that a crime mister Blazer?"
"Am I saying these people should be allowed to run free in secrecy, that they should be able to abuse their powers while being protected from discovery? No Mister Blazer. As you well know, power does not come without responsibility, and consequences. There are forces at work to keep these people from abusing their power to seize control of the world. The general public, however, is not one of them. What about their right to know? Rights are a funny thing. I could equally ask you about the people's right to live their lives without being constantly harassed, assaulted, and killed. Because I can guarantee you that would happen. And which would be easier to grant Congressman Blazer? Letting people live out their lives with supernatural powers, letting them go unharassed, yet not without guidelines to keep them in check? Or informing the mass population of the truth around them, and protecting the innocent Supernaturals who never did anything wrong?"
"People won't do that surely, right? Do I need to remind you of what your own race did not Seventy years ago? Or perhaps what it did not two hundred years ago even. Normal men and women who weren't viewed as deranged, lunatics. People who weren't considered mass murdering dictators. Confused about what I might be referring to Congressman blazer? Perhaps we should look into the history of the African people. How their dark skin got them treated not only as different, but as inferior 'property' to be owned. People often claim that being different is a good thing. They claim that uniqueness is a great quality, that it makes humanity so special. Yet for all of it's preaching of the greatness that is difference, it has treated differences the same throughout history. It has treated it with fear and intolerance."
"Is that the world you want to create Mister Blazer? Because that is what you are about to start. You had best be ready for the consequences of your actions. You can't unpull a trigger Congressman Blazer." The deity let those words hang into the air for a moment before he leaned back into his chair. The then looked back towards the General sat across from him. It was now his turn to be the object of the deity's attention.
"Your very words are a contradiction unto themselves. For your first question, I have faced things that you cannot possibly begin to imagine. If you think that elementals are the worst thing to ever inhabit this planet than you really need to do your research. Secondly, there in lies your problem. You are already treating them like an opponent. Tell me General, how many of them have started wars with humanity? How many elemental 'armies' have you seen? How many elemental related attacks have you seen? Because I seriously doubt you've seen that many. Yet you've already classified them as an enemy. Fuck talking, they're the bad guys. Different doesn't mean bad."
"And funny how you should mention Hitler and Stalin. Funny how you should neglect all the other people who have come before, and since those men. Your current president invaded Iraq yes? He's taken over another country to 'depose' a dictator I believe? So are you telling me that if I were to go over there and talk to ALL the people of Iraq who weren't insurgents. Let's just say there was some magical way to tell who they were. If I were to go over there and talk to all the non-insurgents in Iraq... are you telling me that not ONE of them would have any negative feelings about the invasion of their country? That NONE of them would feel that the U.S. had no right to invade them? And lets go back further. Alaskans, Hawaiians... Japanese, Germans, Africans, Native Americans. No matter where you look in history General, the people you have described exist in the normal world. Do you think that the current presidents are elementals? Do you believe that it was elementals who took the land your nation sits on from the Native Americans?"
"Through all of this, these men aren't viewed, by the general public, to be bad people. Yet Hitler, and Stalin, who did the exact same thing in a shorter amount of time... they're viewed as bad men, simply because they're different. Simply because the winners of the wars did not approve. Do you think that Stalin and Hitler would be viewed as bad men if they won? Equally do you think they wouldn't be viewed as bad men if it weren't for what they did outside of seizing land? You believe that because they have power, that they will inevitably use it for ill. Yet you are doing that exact same thing here, right now. You are using your power, as a general in the United States armed forces to bring YOUR justice upon people who have done nothing wrong."
The deity simply gazed intently at the man across the desk. Locutus wasn't about to be brushed aside by this man. His callous exterior may have been tough enough to deflect a punch or two that any human can throw at him, but was it really bulletproof enough to withstand a god?
