The mid morning light glistened off of the clear waters of Anchorage bay, with the occasional cloud casting it's shadow. The air was crisp and filled with the smell of salt water. Fisherman padded along the docks; hauling crates of all size and preparing for a long day of fishing. Sitting outside a small coffee shop on the pier was a blue haired girl, wearing jeans and a grey hoodie, most of the fisherman gave her weird glances as they passed by. Maybe it was the blue hair or that she just seemed to be staring into sky at nothing. Despite the glances she didn't seem to care at the moment.
Linette took another sip of her hot chocolate and looked to her watch, then the sky. "Where are you Apollo;we agreed to meet here an hour ago. I swear you act like such a kid at times" Linette thought to her self. Could she blame him though? It took her all but begging to get him to come. If she remembered correctly his first response to her proposal was "You want to do what!? That's insane" So having an Ahklut as a pet wasn't the most practical or safe idea, but they're giant fluffy whale puppies and she wanted one .Gram had offered to buy her a puppy, but she politely declined. She did however wish she'd taken his offer to buy her plane ticket. The Swim to Anchorage was chilly at the end. Linette pulled out her phone to see if she'd missed any calls. Unfortunately she hadn't. "Where is that kid" she said to herself while taking another sip of hot chocolate.

A type 64 pistol sat across Apollo's bed. Next to it was a rather long army knife. Leaning on the bed was a sniper rifle. Apollo didn't know which type it was, but he had fired it a few rounds and knew that he could grow accustomed to it. On the ground next to the rifle was a shotgun, the ever faithful shotgun Cutthroat had given to Apollo as his first hunting weapon. In his hands was a silver pistol that he was shining with an oiled towel.
His weapon supply had become larger since the first time he decided to become a hunter. When he was just discovering this new world, he had nothing but a knife. That knife got him far, allowed him to steal whatever he wanted and kill whoever he wanted, but it stood no chance with the life Apollo decided to live. The first time he had even thought of killing a supernatural, he failed and nearly died. If it wasn't for his dragon, Apollo would have been vampire meat. His dragon was always the helpful one.
After polishing the gun until light beamed off of it like the sun, Apollo placed it in his pants. The pistol in his bed was also placed in his hands, both weapons hidden by his long sleeved shirt and blue coat. The knife was placed perfectly into its scabbard, which was attached to his leg to be hidden by his pants. All that was left for Apollo to worry about then were the two long weapons near his bed. Carefully, he loaded both inside a black bag, along with the magnums for the weapons. Apollo enjoyed the sound of the zipper closing. This meant that he was done packing, and he could finally relax before meeting his friend.
You know this is crazy, right? Bayla whispered to his mind with her telepathic abilities. She was sitting on a couch near him in her human form, a female with delicate pale skin and short blood red hair with ocean blue eyes. Apollo saw a model that looked exactly like she did on a billboard. When Bayla saw that he was gawking at the billboard, she decided to make that model her new human appearance. Apollo didn't mind, as long as she stopped looking like Pandora with larger breasts. He enjoyed the look, but it was on the wrong supernatural.
Apollo sighed when he noticed Bayla butt naked, legs high on the seat's armrest, with a book in her hand. He use to yell at her for being human and naked constantly, but she hated to wear clothing, so every time he yelled she would spit acid at him, missing on purpose but getting her point clearly across.
"i know..." Apollo replied to his dragon, then stood up and held the black bag over his back. "But I promised Linette that I would do this and the plans are already made. I can't go back now."
Baloney, Bayla hissed at Apollo. He scowled at her back, obviously not liking her attitude. The more they were together, the closer they got; the closer they got, the more they seemed to want to rip each others head off.
"C'mon, we have to meet her or we will be late," Apollo opened his jacket to reveal a pouch large enough for a Chihuahua to fit into.
Bayla simply hissed at him. I will not be joining you on this quest to achieve frostbite. I am a dragon, and dragons do not freeze!
"They seem to complain a lot."
Bayla spat acid at him. This time he dodged out of the way, for he felt like she was actually trying to aim for him. I will not go! Bayla stomped her foot like a child. If she was in dragon form, that stomp would be large enough to cause an earthquake. Even still, Apollo could feel the ground shake below him.
"With or without you, i am going to kill some Ahklut. However, just remember what the hell happens to you if I die without your protection. I am you, in mind, pleasure, and pain. If I die..."
Fine! Bayla relented. Slowly and reluctantly, Apollo's dragon shifted into a Chow Chow puppy and hopped into his inner jacket pocket. There she made a nice comfortable nest, one that would keep her warm throughout this entire ordeal.
"Alright. let's go steal us a puppy." Apollo left the hotel that he was staying at and made way for the meeting area. He took the bus since he didn't have a car, and regretted the decision when the bus became trapped in traffic. Most of the ride over, Bayla teased Apollo for not choosing a hotel closer to where Linette was. At one point, Apollo punched Bayla just to shut her up. However, that was a bad idea because he felt what she felt, and what she felt was incredible pain. For some reason, though, Bayla found great humor in that and commenced to call him a dumbass throughout the rest of the ride.
An hour had passed when Apollo finally arrived at his destination. He left the bus in a hurry, racing towards where Linette had told them to meet. He was already extremely late, and would probably get a stern talking to from the mild mannered mermaid once he saw her. It took another fifteen minutes to finally meet Linette. By this time he was sweaty, out of breath, and Bayla was telepathically complaining to him about how hot it was inside his jacket. He ignored his dragon for the most part, and only focused on the girl who was the real reason for his being in Anchorage, Alaska.
Quick to think of a way to stop her from yelling at him, Apollo asked Linette a question. "Quick! Tell me everything you know about Ahklut! From the different types to their greatest strengths!"

The man sat on a cold, uncomfortable bench outside a local pawnshop, watching the water vapor from his breath dissipate in the chill air between drinks of the potent but cheap liquor he was so fond of. Hard, steel eyes stared out from a surly, grizzled face, fixing any passersby with a glare. As usual, he was in a brusque, disagreeable mood but today he was drinking less than normal, having a job to do later on.
Taking another swig of his flask, the grizzled old man stood up, taking up the worn, faded blue work cap that he’d set beside him on the bench earlier to cram it atop the messy, uncombed black and grey tangle that was his hair. Not even bothering to glance at it, Ben took up a pack of supplies he’d gathered and set aside and he slung it over his shoulder.
Grunting with satisfaction that he wasn’t forgetting anything, the man shoved his rough, calloused hands into the pockets of his old but serviceable coat and set off. Ben had a job ferrying some young couple or whatever on his boat. The pay was shitty but it wasn’t like he had jobs knocking down his door. He’d taken it and grumbled to himself about it for hours afterward but Ben would do what he’d been paid to do.
Upon reaching the docks, Ben set up shop in front of his boat and took a cheap cigar out from his coat. He struck a match a moment later and, careful not to set those wild, collar long mutton chops of his aflame, he lit it. Puffing away, Ben pulled his old cap on just a little bit tighter and began to wait, keeping a lookout for the people he was expecting.

Shout, hollers, and a few crashes could be heard further up the pier. Linette just shook her head not even needing to look to know that Apollo was making his grand entrance as always. She was more focused on the looming storm clouds off in the horizon. She could feel the storm brewing in the water, and it didn't feel like it was going to be very nice one at that. However created the perfect conditions to find what she was after. A Prime Akhlut ,the most noble and fierce of its species, legend said that these creatures were indomitable and a force of nature.
Averting her gaze she could she her friend navigating his way through the crowded peer towards her.A few fisherman didn't seem to pleased with her friend barging through, but none seemed willing to waste the time the teach the young lad a lesson. "Only an hour and fifteen minutes late" she thought to herself. His red cloak was replaced with a blue jacket this time and the black bag he carried seemed to be much more full as well.
As he drew near " you...." "Quick! Tell me everything you know about Ahklut! From the different types to their greatest strengths!" he blurted out not giving her a chance to scold him. It almost made her giggle; here he stood in a sweat with half the dock workers agitated with him and he was worried about a scolding from her. Linette embraced him in a hug "It's good to see you too Apollo" she pulled away to look him in the eye "We can talk about you being late some other time" motioning for him to sit. Linette reached into her bag and pulled out a weathered leather field journal covered in moss and other algae; it wasn't in the best condition, but it was the best source of information about Akhluts available.
"As for your question. Inuit legend describes them as vengeful Orca spirits capable of taking on the form of a giant wolves to eat people. I however looked into what i could find in my own libraries and found this" she motioned to the book
" Here it mentions that there are three kinds of Akhlut. The Akhlut common which is pretty much a hulking ball of brute strength and power. Then there's the diving Akhlut which is slightly smaller in size but prefers the water; it is also more intelligent than your basic common Akhlut. Finally the Alpha of the pack is the Prime Akhlut which is said to be an indomitable creature.... everything else about it is lost" she trailed off, showing Apollo the tattered remains of the second page. Taking a moment to catch her breathe Linette tried to remember any potentially crucial information that she might have left out. She took the last sip of her hot chocolate, letting Apollo digest the tidal wave of information that she spewed at him.
"So all we have to do is find them now" she smiled attempting to mask any fear or concern that her voice may have conveyed. She scanned the crowd around the pier "You said you found a captain and boa for or adventure?" turning back to Apollo she knocked the small glass of water over onto the book soaking its delicate pages. Linette placed her hand above the drenched page and slowly pulled the moisture out of the parchment being careful not to ruin any of the text. She just smiled at Apollo.

One thing Apollo didn't expect from Linette was a hug. A scolding maybe, but he never thought himself worthy of her embrace. It made him kinda happy when she greeted him, and he blushed a little.
"It's good to see you too Apollo," she said.
"G-good. Yeah, t-totally," he replied.
Bayla took note of his nervous feeling and laughed innerly at him. Still can't be around girls can you, Apollo? Bayla teased him inside his mind. And even when I took the time to be naked.
Apollo ignored his dragon to listen to what Linette had to say next. It was especially hard not to listen to her when her sea water eyes were looking deeply at him. "We can talk about you being late some other time," Linette said, then she sat down to pull out an ancient looking book. "As for your question," she went on. "Inuit legend describes them as vengeful Orca spirits capable of taking on the form of a giant wolves to eat people. I however looked into what i could find in my own libraries and found this-" Linette's hands went towards the book, and Apollo stared at it. It certainly looked like it knew a lot, but the boy questioned if there was ever a book that could know so much about a creature of legend. If there was, then it was more than likely made by a hunter.
"Here it mentions that there are three kinds of Akhlut," Linette continued, Apollo only half listening to her and half thinking to himself. "The Akhlut common which is pretty much a hulking ball of brute strength and power. Then there's the diving Akhlut which is slightly smaller in size but prefers the water; it is also more intelligent than your basic common Akhlut. Finally the Alpha of the pack is the Prime Akhlut which is said to be an indomitable creature.... everything else about it is lost..."
Linette pointed to the second page of the book, and Apollo sighed. So there wasn't much to note. no weaknesses known and no specific location addressed. They were as blind as a bat with sonar, the information Linette just gave being the sonar.
"So all we have to do is find them now," she said with a little quake in her voice. She tried to mask her fear with a smile, but Apollo saw her, and he knew what she felt. Heck, he was feeling the same thing. A whole year of investigating and fighting monsters had not ridden him of his frightened spirit.
Linette finally said something about Apollo's boat plans, then she spilt water on the book. There goes our book guide, Apollo thought until she pulled all the liquid inside the book out. Impressed, Apollo clapped at her while also meeting her smile with his own warm and confident one.
"I have a friend," Apollo started. "He's a good one. Many people owe him favors for all the help he has done. One in particular works for a captain of a Boa ship. After a few calls, we got a captain willing to help us with our hunt. Although, that captain doesn't know our real reason for traveling the sea. For all he knows, he's just transporting two lovestruck kids."
Apollo looked at his watch and noticed that it was almost time to meet the captain he mentioned. He hopped up swiftly and prepared to leave. But before leaving, he had one more thing he needed to tell Linette. "We'll be following the Ahklut's smell, with this." Apollo pulled out the chow chow puppy that was Bayla from the inside of his jacket. His disguised dragon said and did nothing when she was shown, just stared at Linette with large puppy dog eyes. "She has a good nose, and can find anything, even while it is hidden within the snow."
Bayla gave a low growl when the cold air blew in her face, and before she went crazy trying to find a new source of warmth, Apollo placed her back inside his jacket. "Too bad she hates the cold..."
He picked up his black bag that he dropped next to him when he met Linette, then he stood next to the docks, waiting for Linette to gather her things and herself. "It's almost time," he said. "We should get going."

The old man slowly savored the smoke, contemplating the dangerous undertaking he was about to make. Chillaxing in the lawn chair he’d set up, Ben attempted to pour a bottle of jack down his throat without removing the cigar. Not a moment later he was leaning forward, gasping up half a lungful of whiskey, the cigar on the ground in a puddle of bile and shame.
Real nonchalant-like, Ben proceeded to ring the whiskey out of his muttonchops before taking out another cigar. He decided to just chew on this one, not even bothering to light it as Ben stared down a cat sitting across from him.
It was nearly time for the young couple to arrive so the old man finished his whiskey, chewed the tip of his cigar a few more times, shoved the thing into his pocket and stood up. He stretched a little, groaning at the stiffness in his old joints.
Muttering under his breath about a bad hip, Ben climbed aboard the boat. He tugged at his worn old cap, grunting in greeting at one of his crew as he made his way to the control room.
Ben made sure everything was ready to go before he retired to a dim room that reeked of liquor and cigar smoke and cracked open a bottle of vodka, waiting for the two passengers to arrive.

Linette blushed as Apollo clapped at her effort to save their only reference to Akhluts. " It was my fault it almost got ruined" she thought; however, it still made her happy that he seemed impressed with her skills. Not only that but the his warm smile gave her a shred of hope that this idea wasn't completely insane.
Linette did not like the idea of having a captain that was a friend of a friend who owed Apollo's contact a favor. These kinds of situations always had some sort of hitch involved and they never worked out well for anyone involved. Despite this hic-cup she didn't have an alter plan for transportation either.
"Awwww, what an adorable puppy" Linette gushed as Apollo pulled the small creature from the confines of his jacket. She felt bad for the poor thing having to to help track down Akhluts in the arctic hurricane that was brewing; why hadn't Apollo brought a bigger dog to help track down such dangerous animals?
As Apollo put the small creature back in his bag Linette sealed the journal shut and returned it to its place in her stuffed back pack. It seemed that everything was in place as she went through her mental check list "warm clothes, water bottles, sleeping bag, matches, rope, etc..." everything seemed in its place and ready to go. Sealing the bag shut and slinging it over her shoulder; Linette grabbed Apollo bye the arm and stepped closer to him.
"I'm ready to go" she smiled up at him; his look of confusion on made her blush " We're a love struck couple, remember...?" She said attempting to hide her warm cheeks. "Shall we?" she indicated pointing out to the crowded docks.

It appeared that Apollo made Linette happy when he clapped for her. He liked that, for that meant that she was a little calmer about this life threatening mission. The better she felt, the better she performed, and the greater chance Apollo had of protecting her.
She seemed like a good, or even great, girl to Apollo. It wasn't often that he could meet a girl his age during his travels, and most of the girls/women he met were very mean. A pink haired hunter named Rae was a girl with many problems, maybe even equal to the amount Apollo had, or maybe more. She once held a gun to Apollo's head and threatened to kill him because he talked too much. That was his worst experience with a girl, second being the time a dark haired mean mugged chick punched the hell out of him for accidentally burning her. Apollo's experiences with women weren't great, but at least this one was going fine.
Before they left, Linette checked her bags, probably to make sure she was all packed. She stood up from her seat, grabbed her bag, then came close and held onto Apollo's right arm when she was ready to leave. Apollo froze in confusion, embarrassment, and happiness. His cheeks were quickly turning blood red, and Bayla started mentally attacking Apollo for making his inside jacket too hot again.
"I'm ready to go," Linette smiled, a sweet smile that Apollo couldn't believe was addressed at him. Was he worth this close attention from Linette? What did this even mean??? Apollo's chest was pounding hard while he was managing to compose himself infront of the blue haired girl. When she saw his expression, she blushed and suddenly added, " We're a love struck couple, remember...?" Now his heart pumped even harder, possibly past that of the normal human speed.
"O-o-o-o-," was all he could get out. He couldn't even form a word anymore!
Apollo smiled at her weakly. He enjoyed how close she was, but he didn't know what to do with this. So, Apollo just walked, carefully, matching the pace of Linette, as a gentlemen would do when escorting a lady. If they made good time, within minutes they would be at the boat where a captain would wait for their arrival. With his heart pounding and mind swirling, Apollo would lead Linette on the boat, and help her aboard if she needed him. When they met the captain Apollo would present two tickets, given by his friend's friend. Apollo would then wordlessly- because he still wouldn't be able to speak- pick a side of the boat to sightsee, thinking rapid thoughts to himself.

Drinking heavily from the bottle, the grizzled old man glowered in the direction of the wall across from where he sat. A low growling sound began to emit from his mouth. Fricking paint. He neglects and abuses the wall and how does it repay him? By peeling. The sight of it was beginning to piss him off.
Ben stood up and limped over to the wall, taking another swig from the bottle. He leaned his forehead against the wall, breathing heavily as he stood there for a few moments.
A knock came from outside the door and Locke quickly turned to face it. He stared at the door for a second before turning back to the wall.
“A man’s got to know his limitations,” Ben grumbled at it before limping over to answer.
The ornery old man was greeted with the sight of one of his crewmen. Ben lit a new cigar as he faced him down with bloodshot eyes and a glare that promised incomprehensible pain for disturbing him. The crewman nervously informed him that the passengers had arrived.
Ben thanked the man and strode past, limping along on his peg leg to meet the young couple. He tugged his cap on a little tighter as he did so, grumbling about old walls.
A couple newer members of the crew exchanged bemused looks over the sudden change in the number of legs he possessed. But following the example of the more experienced crew they shrugged and went back to work.
Once Apple and Linette had climbed aboard, Ben greeted them, leaning against the railing to take some weight off of his peg leg. He took a long draw from his cigar before speaking.
“Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn't have messed with? That's me.”
Ben spat over the railing, glaring at the two. He’d agreed to take these two but that didn’t mean he had to like playing the glorified ferryman.
“You follow the rules of this here boat, do your share when required, we’ll get along just fine.”
The grizzled old man resumed smoking his cigar, eyeing the two with bloodshot eyes, finally accepting the proffered tickets.

Linette followed Apollo's lead down the docks.Snuggling up to his arm she could feel the warmth emitting from his jacket. It felt wonderful in contrast to the brisk morning air; however, Apollo's movements felt stiff and mechanical. Glancing up Linette noticed that he seemed to be sweating a lot and his face was little red. " I hope he's not that embarrassed to be seen with me" she thought continuing her game of looking at the wooden boards bellow her and back to Apollo. "Maybe its, my hair" combing her hands through the blue locks by her shoulder.
Befuddled in her thoughts Linette barely realized that they had made it to her destination. It was only the foul smell of liquor and smoke wafting in her nose that woke her from her bubble. The sight that greeted her wasn't one she was excited about; the old captain had seen better days. As he spoke Linette buried herself int Apollo's side; she wished she could hide in his jacket like the small chow chow puppy.
As the captain finished his rant about rules and helping aboard the boat Linette shook her head in reply to his question. "God i wish he'd use some mouth wash or something" she whispered following Apollo to the starboard side of the boat. He was still extremely quiet, come to think of it he'd barely said a word since they'd boarded. It was then a faint hum caught Linette's ear.
It was a pod of humpback whales singing out in the bay. The sound filled her heart with a warmth and happiness that words failed to describe. She hummed along with them for a short time; attempting to math their pitch. She again looked to Apollo in hopes he'd broken from his trance. "Are you OK, you've barely said a word since we left the coffee shop...?" she looked pleadingly at Apollo

Having Linette snuggle close to him... The way she played her hands through her deep blue hair... And her sweet, wonderful girly aroma that made tickled his nose. Apollo didn't know what to do... He didn't know what to do.
His spell that Linette casted on him nearly ended, though, when they both met the captain of this ship. He looked like the type of guy who cared nothing for anyone. Apollo saw those types of people, and even murdered some of them, so he knew that this guy was going to be a bad captain.
When Linette made a comment about the captain's mouth, Apollo laughed a little, but more to make sure that she was okay with this arrangement. He felt a powerful sense to protect Linette from this guy, so he even made sure that where she walked was far away from where this guy stood. The less they dealt with him, the less they had problems.
When both Linette and Apollo were alone again, the blue haired girl looked at the embarrassed boy with pleading eyes and asked if he was alright, since he didn't speak for a while.
"Y-y-y-y-yeah. I-I-I-I'm fine!" Apollo forced himself to talk, but he was still having a few problems. He was looking at Linette's worried face and focusing on how he could have her be a little more happier, but all he could think then was how cute she looked under the cold light. He would then turn away in even more embarrassment.
Finally, he said, "J-just a little worried about... The, uh... C-c-captain. You look.... Nice....Linette."

The grizzled old man grunted slightly, satisfied that he’d gotten his message across to the two young-ins. He shuffled off toward the control room, puffing away on his cigar. The door’s rusty hinges squeaked loudly as he pulled the thing open and closed after he’d limped inside.
“How’re we lookin’, Bill?” Ben asked, coming to a stop next to the burly navigator. Bill was a stocky man, standing at roughly six feet of height, same as the grizzled old captain himself, but he appeared simultaneously bigger and smaller due to his developed upper body and abundant body hair.
“I’ve receptioned the report from Murphy only moments ago,” The man began in his deep bass voice, briefly glancing up from the paper he’d been reading when the captain had entered the room. “But ‘erything looks be good, engine-wise. Supplies stocked, crew ‘counted fer…” The man trailed off for a second but looked back up at Ben and nodded.
“Push off time, all.” the captain spoke through the speaker, informing the crew that the ship was now leaving the docks.
Ben clapped the stocky man on the shoulder, grinning, before the grizzled old man set the receiver down and proceeded to limp from the control room to begin his walking tour of the ship where he would inspect everything, triple check that all of the crew was accounted for, and make sure that neither of his guests had managed to fall overboard in the brief time he’d left them alone.

"Y-y-y-y-yeah. I-I-I-I'm fine!" he said not sounding sure of him self at all. Granted Linette and Apollo weren't the nest of friends; she could tell that something was on his mind. When they had first met on mount Olympus Apollo seemed cool calm and collect; like nothing could bring him down. If he didn't want to share she couldn't force him.
Linette looked back out on the horizon; the storm was still coming and it would be strong. She could feel its fury and malice in her bones. Glancing about the deck she realized that most of the men aboard had their "sea legs" as humans called them. Apollo broke her train of thought saying "J-just a little worried about... The, uh... C-c-captain. You look.... Nice....Linette."
This made her blush " Thank you" she smiled back to him. She wasn't to fond of the captain either. There was just something about him that didn't seem right. He certainly didn't seem the type to be taking young honey couples on boat tours in Alaska.
"I don't trust him either, but hopefully once we make port in Yakataga we can be rid of him" she whispered trying to reassure him. There was enough to be worried about as it was; the last thing they needed was the captain complicating matters. As if on cue the captain announced of the speakers that they'd be casting off in a few moments

"I don't trust him either," Linette whispered in Apollo's ears. "But hopefully once we make port in Yakataga we can be rid of him."
If we make it at all, Apollo thought to himself. His uneasy feeling around his new captain meant something, but he wouldn't dare show it with Linette around. The better they felt, the easier their job.
I smelled alcohol on him, Bayla told Apollo with her mind. She was still cuddled up in his pocket, but she could smell any being from a mile away. And he doesn't smell human....
Apollo stared up at the intercom as it sounded throughout the boat. The captain was speaking in it, and warning everyone that it was time to leave. Apollo leaned on the railing, watching as the scenery slowly began to move. It was a beautiful sight, but the air and the thought of swimming in the cool waters made it less enjoyable. However, it was still a good sight to see.
"Pandora and Gram would like this..." Apollo said out loud unintentionally. He sounded a little sad, which wasn't his aim. He hoped that his comment didn't effect Linette in any negative way.
The captain began his long tour around the ship, checking everything to see its efficiency, Apollo thought. At the end, he looked towards Apollo and Linette to see if they were still onboard. Wave to him! Bayla advised Apollo to do, but he found that he wanted to bring less attention to the captain than needed. There was a long trip ahead, and Apollo wanted no bad blood to boil while along the way.
In an attempt to make conversation, Apollo looked at Linette and asked, "So, why are you so interested in capturing this Ahklut anyway? Don't a lot of your species have... Well... Sea creatures, where you come from?"

The grizzled old man limped over to the pair, gritting his teeth at the pain shooting up from his peg leg. He stopped an uncomfortably close distance from them, close enough for them to smell the overpowering scent of alcohol with every wheezing, rasping lungful he took from the crisp, northern air and see deep within every crack, every wrinkle in his aged skin
“There's a rebel lying deep in my soul. Anytime anybody tells me the trend is such and such, I go the opposite direction. I do my own thinkin’ an I’ve been thinkin’.”
Ben paused in his rant to eye the young couple angrily.
“Now, once I tried being reasonable. I didn’t like it. So here goes the straightforward approach.”
The captain was one of his characters but, like many of the people Ben pretended to be, Captain Flint Nor’easter was an actual person. Or, at least, he used to be. Right about now, if the sphinx had to guess, he’d say the old drunk was rotting in a barrel of brine somewhere forgotten.
The real Flint probably wouldn’t have cared. That man would’ve just given his crew their orders and holed up in his cabin to finish working his way through his latest liver. But Ben wasn’t a complete fool.
Apples and Linette were after something. An animal something. Whatever it was, they obviously couldn’t go through the usual channels so here they were, having secured passage aboard the ship of what was debatably Ben’s most abrasive character yet.
“Now, tomorrow is promised to no one. If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster, I always say.” The gruff old man declared. “I know you two are after something and there’s only one beastie I know of thas worth huntin’ this far north. I won’t have such. Not on my boat. I'll kick yer asses off my boat so fast yer heads'll spin.”
Ben turned to the side and spat. “I’m not willing to risk my crew cause some two young fools have got an idea in their heads. Tell me now and I’d might’n be willing to offer you my help, but I want to know what you two are planning and whether or not it endangers my crew.”
The grizzled old man crossed his arms over his chest and waited for their response.
