Morgan sighed and finally looked up and over at Aela who was apologizing to them and she nodded. She knew Aela had not meant to, though it still really stung her deep inside. She had though that perhaps they where above these sorts of things, that Aela could tell them (or her at least) what was going on and what was happening. However she had felt the need to keep these things to herself and let it eat away at herself. That hurt Morgan's feelings slightly, and she was not about to just let it drop. However, for the sake of continuity of the group she was going to let it go until a later point in time when it was more prudent to talk to Aela alone about that. She wanted to mend this wound, this small rift between them and hoped that it would bring them closer together eventually in the end.
So Morgan smiled at Aela and reaching over and laid her hand on top of Aela's hand and rubbed it gently. She looked at her friend's face, trying to catch her eye and showing her that she forgave her. She wanted this to be alright, right now, and that they could all just move on from this incident. "It is alright, Aela. We forgive you, and we can move past this now. How about you just tell us what we are here for and get it off your chest. That way it is all out in the open and we can discuss what is going on."

Damn right I'm right, Jack thought to himself, mentally huffing. Aela wasn't being very nice and Nyght was acting like a little girl and no one was laughing at his jokes! It was an outrage. But at least Aela had apologized. Now if only she'd finally spill the beans about what was so important that she had to drag them all the way out to this arctic wasteland. Alaska was so far of the young man's usual route that he'd actually needed to be flown there. He'd never been, so Jack couldn't have teleported. That annoyed him.
The man put his arms on the table an rested his chin upon his forearms. Jack was waiting for the waitress to come back. He didn't forgive Aela for her behavior, but didn't feel too particularly inclined to correct Nyght's assertion that they forgave her. It didn't really matter, anyways. His grumbling stomach told him it was past time for dinner.

Nyght watched as the waitress approached, and she licked her lips glancing at Jack and was eager to get down to the business of stuffing her face with some food. When asked, she quickly ordered a hamburger and steak fries, and waited impatiently sipping on a glass of water for their food until it got there. When the big juicy cheeseburger, smothered with sauteed onions and mushrooms with fresh lettuce and tomatoes arrived with a side of piping hot fresh french fries she dug right in to the meal with gusto. She chewed and chomped, devouring the burger and licking her fingers between bites while delving her fries in to a pile of ketchup and eating those between bites of delicious hamburger.
Almost finished with her meal, Nyght was slowing down and now eating more conservatively. She set her burger down for a moment, wiping her fingers with a napkin then looked up. There was a tension in the air that had not been there a while ago. She looked around, but saw nothing out of the ordinary inside the restaurant. It was not...danger she felt per say but just a tense feeling between her shoulders. Like something was about to happen. Suddenly there was a commotion outside, and people where suddenly running and screaming outside. The people inside the restaurant began to get up and leave, hurrying outside to see what was happening. Grabbing her backpack, Nyght leap out of the seat and hustled outside to see what was going on.

The young man rubbed his poor, growling tummy. All around them everyone was eating delicious food and they were just sitting there. Where was the damn waitress!? Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the woman reappeared. Once it was his turn, Jack would place his order, requesting the burger he'd been craving since what felt like forever. Two perfectly prepared beef patties smothered in cheese, sauce, and all those other little ingredients that make a burger great, all topped with four delicious slices of bacon. And to make everything even more ridiculously delicious? The young man requested that an egg be fried atop the burger. He fucking loved that shit.
"Ugh. Don't you see what happens when I go too long without eating?" The young man told them once the waitress had left, feeling a little gluttonous after ordering his disgustingly decadent burger. He'd most likely drop right there at the table upon finishing it. Heart attack. Stroke. The works.
Once the food arrived, Jack no longer carried. He tore into the burger with gusto, eating quickly but savoring every single bite. Burger juice and such covered his hands and face but he didn't care, alternating shoving fries into his face and taking hug bites out of the burger. In the end he thoroughly cleaned his face and hands, sitting back with a satisfied sigh. The young man rarely got to eat like that. The burgers you could find at a fast food joint just didn't compare to the ones prepared by a professional.
People were suddenly running outside, screaming. Nyght took off. Jack hefted his pack onto his shoulder and headed after her, assuming Aela would be right behind. He wouldn't notice that they'd lost her in the crowd until some time later. Once outside, Jack jostled past people, pushing and shoving when he had to, desperate to keep Nyght in sight. Once he'd managed to reach her he stood next to her and asked.

Nyght had forgotten to wait for Jack, but the male came up behind her and spoke in to her hear, asking what the hell was going on. She did not answer however, because she was not entirely sure she had an answer for that question. People where running past them, shoving and telling others to get out of the way. Nyght was frowning, trying to see over them and catch a glimpse of what was going on. She could not really see anything from here, and so glancing back just once she grabbed Jack's hand so they would not be separated and dragged him along behind her.
"I do not know, Jack! Let us get closer and find out!" She ran against the crowds, pushing her way past the on rushing panic fueled people. Perhaps she was not afraid because she had not seen what was going on, or perhaps Nyght just did not fear like most people did. She had proven that several times over, running towards danger and not backing down even when it was the most intelligent thing to do. Why she was like this, she would never know herself. All she knew was that she wanted to find out what was going on.
Coming out on towards the back of the rushing people, she looked around trying to see what was going on. There was the street, and there was the white snow. In the snow, melted then refrozen in the frigid temperature was a whole lot of red. There was a large amount centered around what looked like what has use to be a horse drawn cart but was not smashed to wooden scrap on one side of the road. There was a massive amount of the blood there and around the smashed cart, then a trail of it along with a large plow of snow that looked like something large and bleeding had been dragged away. The marks lead off in to a dark alley, and Nyght quickly jabbed her elbow in to Jack's ribs and directed his attention that way if he had not gotten the idea from the scene.
"Looks like something dragged something BIG in to the alley. Dunno...could have been the horse pulling that wagon though."

The young man flinched slightly when Nyght grabbed his hand but he was too curious about whatever was going on to pull away. So he allowed himself to be led, keeping up without too much trouble.
Once they'd finally managed to break through the crowd, Jack could see a lot of bloody snow. He studied the curious scene, wondering what exactly had occurred here. There was some kind of broken cart in the middle of it all. Like one of those horse drawn contraptions one would have seen a lot before the invention of the automobile. Did people even still use those things? It didn't matter. Anyways, the young man supposed that would explain where all the blood had come from.
Horses were pretty big. But where had the darn thing run off to? Well, been dragged off to. Nothing was going to be doing much running on its own with all the blood Jack was seeing. Nyght felt it necessary to jab him in the ribs, as if he hadn't been paying attention. The young man winced.
"Yeah, yeah. I see." Jack grumbled, rubbing his sore ribs where he'd been so viciously assaulted and looking in the direction she'd indicated. "If we follow the trail, what do you think we'll find at the end?" The young man rubbed his chin, thinking.

Nyght frowned, wondering what was strong enough to haul an entire horse off. Maybe a werebeast of some kind had done the attack. That might explain the sudden fear and terror of everybody running away from the scene. "Perhaps, some sort of werebeast?" She offered in some sort of half hearted explanation towards what she did not really know. She bite her bottom lip, then glanced around and not seeing anybody she nodded down the ally way.
"I am gonna go in, cover me will you Jack?" She asked him, proving her trust of her friend to protect her back and warn her of danger quick enough for her to respond. She then moved towards the ally and pressed her back against the wall beside it and peeked around the corner. She did not see anything with in right away, but decided to be extra careful. She moved along, keeping behind things such dumpsters and piles of trash as she peered around each one trying to make sure it was clear while listening to hear if Jack saw anything. Finally she came to a corner in the ally and not wanting to leave Jack behind peeked around it to make sure nothing was going to leap out and maul her then waved at Jack.
"There is nothing down here, but the trail and path lead down this other ally and out in to a clear area I can not see much of!" She called out to him, letting him know it was safe and there was nothing dangerous down here.

The young man shrugged at Nyght's suggestion that the beastie everyone had been terrified by and was responsible for dragging the horse off was a werebeast. "That sounds unlikely. Why would a werebeast change in front of all these people just to attack some horse?" Jack asked, thinking. He unconsciously reached for the pocket where his gun was hidden.
"I'm right behind you, then."Jack followed Nyght, taking a moment to pull his shotgun from where he'd placed it in his pack. Just in case. Of course he had her back, though it probably would've been better to have him walk in front. The young man possessed the uncanny ability to extract himself from a sticky situation before things became fatal. He was super talented at saving his own skin.
Nyght waved him forward and he approached some. "Think the cops will get here soon? Someone had to have called them." Jack squinted in the direction she'd indicated. "Shall we continue our investigation?"

Nyght nodded at Jack's assessment of that the likelihood of the creature being a werebeast was pretty slim. She did have to agree with that, but still she could think of few creatures besides the a werebeast with the strength to devastate a horse in such a way and then drag it off to feast upon the carcass. At his comments about the police, she snapped her head around and grimaced. The last thing she wanted was for the police to get here and either throw them out or maybe even arrest them as being suspicious or tampering with a crime scene. She bit her lower lip, contemplating then made up her mind.
"I am going to keep looking. I am interested and want to know what is going on. You can come with me if you want, or you can stay back here if your to scared!" She teased him on purpose, kinda like two children on the playground. She knew he was not really scared, and she also knew that he would come along with her. He was just that kind of guy who would follow her...no not follow her. Accompany her and help her out as she helped him. It was a friendship, nothing like those silly movies where somebody was the leader and the others their stooges or minions who did whatever they wanted.
She moved forward, wanting to find out where whatever it had been had gone. She trudged through the snow and followed the path of disturbed, bloodied snow though the blood seemed to be thinner and less abundant as they went. Apparently the horse was bleeding out and did not have much left to give. She hoped it was already dead, for the poor animals sake and had died quickly and mostly painlessly. She suddenly stopped, looking from side to side and grunted waiting for Jack to show up and when he was beside her, whether he had been behind or beside her, she would point a distance away where the bloody path simply vanished in to what appeared to be no where. She whispered softly. "See that? And listen....I hear something like water slapping inside a tub."

The young woman seemed to agree with Jack though she did look somewhat concerned when he mentioned the cops. They wouldn't pose much of a risk but they would be awfully annoying. Normally he could just teleport away and leave the bozos scratching their heads wondering where he'd gone. But with Nyght, Jack couldn't just leave her. He wasn't an asshole.
"I'm not scared of anything!" Jack retorted in response to her teasing. He crossed his arms, feigning an annoyed expression even though he knew it was all in good fun. "Of course I'm with you. Couldn't very well just let you run off on your own and get yourself chewed by some beastie, now could I?"
Jack was next to her, eyeing the trail suspiciously. He cocked his head to the side to listen for the sound she'd described. "Is it smart enough to cover its tracks?" The young man asked, staring at the spot where the trail simply ended. "If it's that cunning..." Jack allowed himself to trail off. The sentence didn't really need finishing. If it was cunning enough to cover it's trail because it knew it would be followed, was the creature smart enough to double back and ambush it's pursuers?

Nyght frowned, grabbing a piece of her hair and twirling it between her fingers as she contemplated the situation. Jack's words where indeed worrisome, for if the creature was smart enough to do such a thing then it could even be such a possibility that this entire thing was a trap to lure somebody out here on to the ice under their feet. However, Nyght wondered softly about the odd water noise. She sighed, and slowly began to inch forward, towards where the spot the blood disappeared.
She paused once, examining a huge print in the snow. It looked like, well a dog print of sorts. With that classical wolf/canine shape but with large claws in front of the toes. The second main difference was the size, a dog print or wolf print where small like around the size of your hand at the biggest. This print was about the size of a dinner plate. She took a deep breath, then stood back up and followed the trail again and finally came to a stop a few feet from where the trail suddenly disappeared. Her eyes widened, and she gasped softly.
"Jack...it did not wipe the trail it. Whatever it was smashed through the ice and swam away!"

The young man furrowed his brow, staring suspiciously at the hole in the ice like it was trying to trick him. Jack wasn't feeling to confident about whatever had attacked that horse. "What predator casually attacks domesticated animals in a populated area and then retreats with it's prey to the bottom of these icy depths? I've never heard of something like that." He supposed that explained the water noise Nyght had commented on.
Jack looked at the print she'd found. He wasn't very good with tracks. "What does that belong to? Some kind of bear? It's awfully big." The young man hugged his shotgun a bit closer. Jack felt more comfortable knowing that if some giant polar bear burst up from the ice to attack them all of a sudden then, well, at least he was armed.
"Does we stop here? I don't know about you, Nyght, but I can't breathe underwater."
Post by Nyghtingale on Oct 31, 2015 13:34:10 GMT -5
Nyght had a sudden, terrible image in her had of something smashing up through the ice and grabbing her to drag her down towards an icy water grave where. She stepped back several time away from the hole, and looked around. She did not say anything at first, but had heard Jack and would answer in a moment after she composed herself and her thoughts.
"I do not know Jack. That print...it looks like a dog print or wolf print. Except it is way to large, obviously. I know of no creature that could make that. As to stopping, I definitely agree because I as well can not breathe underwater. I think...I think we should leave this place and try to find out what is going here. I...am afraid a little and want to find out what is going on here before we decide what to do next!"
She moved away from the hole, moving back towards the town away from the ice flow they where standing upon. She moved slowly but steadily, keeping her eyes open around them for things that where out of place now. Besides the trail they had followed and the hole they had found she saw nothing out of the ordinary besides the snow and ice itself. She shivered, pulling her jacket around herself tighter and wanting to get some place warm again already.

Dog or wolf print. Inwardly, the young man shrugged. He couldn't tell the difference either way. Jack took a piece of gum from his pocket, dropping the wrapper and chewing it absentmindedly while he stared at the hole in the ice. This was quite the mystery. He honestly didn't know what he was going to do about it or whether or not he should even care. Whatever it was, it hadn't hurt anyone. Just a horse. Or, at least, it hadn't hurt anyone yet. Well, that he knew of.
"Sure. How would we go about doing that? Maybe look into local animal attacks or something?" Jack rubbed his chin. He put his hands in his pocket and glanced from the hole to Nyght. "Do you think this thing has attacked humans before, or it just goes after animals?" The young man idly kicked at the ground, trying not to look concerned.

Nyght contemplated Jack's question for a few moments as they headed back in to town. She had enough common sense to move around the town slightly away from the scene that had happened before them and sighed blowing a plume of her white breath before her face. She simply did not know the answer to the question, but she was slightly dreading if she should find out.
"I dunno, Jack. I am assuming from the size it is more then capable of killing a fully grown person. I am just worried about something else. If that creature, whatever it was, dragged a horse that far and in the water....wolves and dogs hunt in packs. Think about a whole pack of these creatures, Jack."
She shivered, contemplating the very prospect of that and closed her eyes for a second trying to shove the sudden mental image of an entire town being over run by violent, vicious, man eating fish wolves. That was not an exceptionally lovely image that popped in to her mind, and she knew that she had to do something about this. Before something like that happened.
"Jack, I have something with me. A book, that might have some sort of information with in it that could help us out. If we can get somewhere warm and dry, I can get it out and I can see if there is anything inside about what this creature might be. It has all sorts of supernatural information inside it."
